KPA Fostering Needs:
On occasion we have a need for foster homes in the following four situations:
Bottle Baby / Infant Fostering
During kitten and puppy season, we often see very young animals come into the shelter who are unable to eat on their own. These fragile babies cannot survive at KCAC, so we place them in foster homes where they can receive the care they need!
This type of fostering is more involved, as it requires feeding the animal every few hours for up to two weeks. KPA provides bottle baby fosters training, as well as everything needed to properly care for the animal.
Throughout the foster period, a KPA representative will keep the foster parent updated regarding placement and next steps for the animal’s future.
Medical Foster
Animals are often brought in by animal control (KCAC) with life-threatening injuries, nursing animals with litters of kittens or puppies or as very young/older animals. These vulnerable souls often do not thrive in the stressful shelter environment. In these cases KCAC may ask KPA! to place the animal in a medical foster home while on their 72-hour stray hold.
Medical fosters typically require a calm, safe environment and a foster who has the time to closely monitor the animal's health and overall progress. KPA provides guidance and support throughout the process!
Awaiting a Rescue Tag
KPA sometimes pulls cats and dogs from KCAC when their time is up and they are at risk of euthanasia. Since we are not an intake facility, we rely on our foster network for support!
During this foster period we are given more time to work at finding a rescue or adopter for the animal. This can take weeks to months so fosters caring for a pet awaiting a rescue tag, meaning the animal is pending placement may need to be prepared to provide care for an indefinite period of time.
Awaiting Transport
A new future awaits! Many times KCAC pets that have been tagged by a rescue require temporary refuge while they await transport or kennel spacing at their new placement. Foster parents caring for these animals may be asked to assist with appearances at vet appointments, on occasion, provide transport directly to the rescue if able.
