Volunteer Opportunities
As a shelter volunteer you must know how to work with all sizes and temperaments of dogs and cats. Weekday hours are 9-11am and Saturdays (sometimes Sundays) 9-11am.
Transporting dogs/cats in town, within the state or sometimes out of state. It just depends if you are available and want to drive to that destination. You can sign up for what makes sense for you and your vehicle.
Each event is different but basically consists of spreading awareness of how Kerrville Pets Alive! is making a difference in Kerr County. You will be added to our SignUp Genius and receive an email when we need help at an event. The description, date(s) and time slots will be in the Sign Up where you can select what you can volunteer for.
We encourage volunteers at Kerr County Animal Control!
These impounded animals benefit greatly from daily socialization and exercise. It is important to understand the environment you will be working in, as well as the qualities needed in a volunteer to help ensure a safe and positive experience for both people and animals. Each volunteer must complete a safety orientation provided by KCAC staff or KPA volunteer coordinators before working with impounded animals.
As a shelter volunteer, you should be comfortable working with dogs and cats of all sizes and temperaments. The shelter environment can be busy and sometimes stressful, and many animals may be experiencing fear or uncertainty, which can make it harder to immediately see their true personalities even for experienced handlers.
Our goal is to gently and thoughtfully assess each animal’s temperament with people of all genders, other dogs and cats, and children. This process may take several days to weeks as we build trust and learn more about each animal to determine their adoptability and the most suitable home. Many of these animals have come from situations involving abandonment, neglect, limited socialization, or other difficult experiences, and they are now adjusting to a new environment. Because of this, sudden movements or loud noises may startle them, so volunteers are encouraged to remain calm, patient, and mindful to help create a reassuring space for them to decompress and thrive!
Shelter Volunteer hours:
Weekday volunteer hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers are also welcome after 1:00 p.m.; however, during the summer months, high temperatures often limit outdoor activities for the dogs. Cats especially benefit from additional socialization inside the shelter, and volunteers are encouraged to spend time with them. For the health and safety of all animals, volunteers are strongly encouraged to keep their pets current on vaccinations!
Volunteer Requirements:
We prefer that volunteers be 18 years of age or older, able to lift 30 pounds or more, and capable of remaining active and alert while working with shelter animals. Volunteers should be comfortable handling animals of various sizes and temperaments. Volunteers under the age of 18 are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times. The accompanying adult must also attend the required safety orientation. In addition, KCAC requires all volunteers to sign a liability waiver prior to participating in activities at the shelter.
Transport Opportunities
We are always in need of dedicated volunteers to help transport animals to their rescue destinations. Transport opportunities may be local, within Texas, or occasionally out of state. The distance and destination vary based on the needs of the animal and the rescue organization. Volunteers can choose transport assignments that fit their availability, comfort level, and vehicle. Whether you can help with a short in-town trip or a longer journey, your assistance plays a vital role in helping animals reach safety and begin their next chapter.
Events
Each event is unique, but the overall goal is to help spread awareness about how Kerrville Pets Alive! is making a difference in Kerr Count! Our presence at community events may include educational outreach, spay/neuter clinics, adoption events, fundraising opportunities, and more.
